Atrisco Heritage Academy Narrowly Defeats Topeka MCJROTC
Atrisco Heritage Academy edged out Topeka MCJROTC 986 to 980 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their third win in a row, Atrisco Heritage Academy is in second place in their Division with a 3 - 0 record. Atrisco Heritage Academy was led by Andrew Romero who shot a 259. The remaining contributing members were Alfred Ballejos, Isaiah Otero, and Jacob Trujillo. Atrisco Heritage Academy is from Albuquerque, NM, and is coached by GYSGT Tim Shaner.
Topeka MCJROTC dropped to 0 - 3 on the season. They are currently in seventh place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Topeka MCJROTC was led by Malachi Large who shot a 254. The remaining contributing members were Kenyan Rew, Mario Alvarado, and Brendan Scott. Topeka MCJROTC is from Topeka, KS, and is coached by CWO3 Curtis Kelley.
Next up Atrisco Heritage Academy will compete against Abraham Clark MCJROTC from Roselle, NJ. Abraham Clark MCJROTC currently has a 0 - 4 record. Topeka MCJROTC will compete against Stranahan MCJROTC from Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Stranahan MCJROTC currently has a 3 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the Marine Corps JROTC Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
