New Braunfels MCJROTC Narrowly Defeats Stranahan MCJROTC
New Braunfels MCJROTC edged out Stranahan MCJROTC 987 to 986 last week in the National Air Rifle League. New Braunfels MCJROTC finishes the season in third place in their Division with a 4 - 2 record. New Braunfels MCJROTC was led by Samuel Baumbach who shot a 256. The remaining contributing members were Janie Aguilar, Sarah Tetzlaff, and Hoang Tran. New Braunfels MCJROTC is from New Braunfels, TX, and is coached by Mark House.
Stranahan MCJROTC dropped to 4 - 2 on the season. They finish the season in fourth place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Stranahan MCJROTC was led by Rebecca Connett who shot a 256. The remaining contributing members were Samantha O'Dell, Samintha Jeudy, and Diamond Jackson. Stranahan MCJROTC is from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and is coached by Wayne Labeau.
These two teams are competing in the Marine Corps JROTC Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
