Warren Central MCJROTC defeats Atrisco Heritage Academy
Shooting their highest score of the season Warren Central MCJROTC defeated Atrisco Heritage Academy 1034 to 990 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Warren Central MCJROTC finishes the season in first place in their Division with a 6 - 0 record. Warren Central MCJROTC was led by SAVANNAH GOMEZ who shot a 270. The remaining contributing members were MARTINA SZABO, ELIZABETH SIZEMORE, and JAMAREEA VANTERPOOL. Warren Central MCJROTC is from Indianapolis, IN, and is coached by Shawn Hudachko.
Snapping a five game win streak Atrisco Heritage Academy dropped to 5 - 1 on the season. They finish the season in second place in their Division. Atrisco Heritage Academy was led by Andrew Romero who shot a 254. The remaining contributing members were Isaiah Otero, Alfred Ballejos, and Jacob Trujillo. Atrisco Heritage Academy is from Albuquerque, NM, and is coached by GYSGT Tim Shaner.
These two teams are competing in the Marine Corps JROTC Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
