West Valley AJROTC defeats Taylor County AJROTC

West Valley AJROTC defeated Taylor County AJROTC 978 to 818 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fourth win in a row, West Valley AJROTC is in second place in their Division with a 5 - 1 record. West Valley AJROTC was led by Logan Snell who shot a 263. The remaining contributing members were Cluadia Pereyda, Vanessa Hinojosa, and Kenny Tash. West Valley AJROTC is from Yakima, WA, and is coached by 1SG Jeff Parks.

Taylor County AJROTC dropped to 2 - 4 on the season. They are currently in sixth place in their Division. Taylor County AJROTC was led by Elizabeth Blue who shot a 228. The remaining contributing members were Sydney Aman, Caroline Hornsby, and Shawna Montgomery. Taylor County AJROTC is from Perry, FL, and is coached by Christopher McDaniel.

Next up West Valley AJROTC will compete against Ridge Community AJROTC from Davenport, FL. Ridge Community AJROTC currently has a 3 - 3 record. Taylor County AJROTC will compete against Ball AJROTC from Galveston, TX. Ball AJROTC currently has a 6 - 0 record.

These two teams are competing in the Army JROTC Leaders Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
