Midland Young Guns Upsets Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports
Shooting their highest score of the season Midland Young Guns upset Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports 969 to 933 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Midland Young Guns was able to win despite averaging 15 points lower than Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports coming into this game.
Their fourth win in a row, Midland Young Guns is in first place in their Division with a 4 - 0 record. Midland Young Guns was led by Brooke Willhite who shot a 265. The remaining contributing members were J.W. Yeary, Emmitt Seabough, and Cinco Yeary. Midland Young Guns is from Midland, TX, and is coached by Kevin Willhite.
Snapping a three game win streak Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports dropped to 3 - 1 on the season. They are currently in second place in their Division. Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports was led by Karalyn Karjala who shot a 240. The remaining contributing members were Isaac Cushenbery, Kaitlyn Karjala, and Deryk Witherspoon. Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports is from Emporia, KS, and is coached by Beverly Hilbish.
Next up Midland Young Guns will compete against Bears Ears Sportsman Club from Craig, CO. Bears Ears Sportsman Club currently has a 3 - 1 record. Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports will compete against Ward County 4-H from Monahans, TX. Ward County 4-H currently has a 1 - 3 record.
These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Elite Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
