Lafayette Gun Club defeats Robinson Rifle Team
Shooting their highest score of the season Lafayette Gun Club defeated Robinson Rifle Team 1637.5 to 1586.8 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row. Lafayette Gun Club finishes the season in third place overall and second place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. They finished the season with a 5 - 2 record. Lafayette Gun Club was led by, Brandon Evans who shot a 415.6. The remaining contributing members were Matthew Stout, Victoria Koenig, and Josh Poole. Lafayette Gun Club is from Grafton, VA, and is coached by Jason Stout.
Robinson Rifle Team finished the season with a 3 - 4 record. They finishes the season in seventh place overall and fifth place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. Shooting their highest team score of the season Robinson Rifle Team was led by, Grant Benson who shot a 406.2. The remaining contributing members were Thomas Mikolashek, William Wilder, and Alex Morris. Robinson Rifle Team is from Fairfax, VA, and is coached by James Miller.
Next up Lafayette Gun Club will compete against Sutter Union High School from Sutter, CA. Sutter Union High School currently has a 3 - 4 record. While Robinson Rifle Team will compete against Atrisco Heritage Academy MCJROTC from Albuquerque, NM. Atrisco Heritage Academy MCJROTC currently has a 1 - 5 record.
These two teams are competing in the Precision Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the conference. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
