Granbury MCJROTC Narrowly Defeats Robinson High School
Granbury MCJROTC edged out Robinson High School 1634.6 to 1630.2 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Granbury MCJROTC finishes the regular season in first place overall and first place within their 'Jrotc' conference. They finished the season with a 7 - 0 record. Granbury MCJROTC was led by, Allison Henry who shot a 411.8. The remaining contributing members were Clarissa Layland, Philip Becker, and Kaylynn Slaughter. Granbury MCJROTC is from Granbury, TX, and is coached by LtCol Scott Casey.
Robinson High School finished the season with a 6 - 1 record. They finishes the regular season in second place overall and first place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. Robinson High School was led by, Scott Patterson who shot a 410.6. The remaining contributing members were Sally Reeke, Andrew Morris, and Jack Kersey. Robinson High School is from Fairfax Station, VA, and is coached by Dave Cunningham.
Both of these teams will advance to the postseason championship tournament, as the number 1 and number 2 seeds respectively. Granbury, seeded first, will take on East Coweta MCJROTC. Robinson High School, seeded second, will compete against Stuttgart AJROTC. The first round of the postseason starts December 2nd.
These two teams are competing in the Precision Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the conference. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
