Gulfport MCJROTC Narrowly Defeats South Panola AFJROTC
Gulfport MCJROTC edged out South Panola AFJROTC 1081 to 1078 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fourth win in a row. Gulfport MCJROTC finishes the season in second place overall and first place within their 'Marine Corps Jrotc' conference. They finished the season with a 7 - 0 record. Gulfport MCJROTC was led by, Mackayla Bourgeois who shot a 280. The remaining contributing members were Dimitri Celentano, Kayla Marroy, and Zachary Karlson. Gulfport MCJROTC is from Biloxi, MS, and is coached by John Owens.
South Panola AFJROTC finished the season with a 4 - 3 record. They finishes the season in eighth place overall and first place within their 'Air Force Jrotc' conference. South Panola AFJROTC was led by, Nicholas Rudd who shot a 276. The remaining contributing members were Raven Hudson, Kayla Walker, and Jason Robertson. South Panola AFJROTC is from Batesville, MS, and is coached by Col Robert Mims.
Both Gulfport MCJROTC and South Panola AFJROTC will advance to the postseason's Championship Tournament. Respectively they are the number two and eight seeds. Gulfport MCJROTC will take on Nation Ford MCJROTC (5 - 2) in their quarterfinal matchup. South Panola AFJROTC will take on Zion Benton NJROTC (6 - 1). The postseason begins 26 November 2018.
These two teams are competing in the Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Divisions is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, where teams compete for their conference's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all conferences advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
