Pascagoula NJROTC defeats South Panola AFJROTC
Pascagoula NJROTC defeated South Panola AFJROTC 1139.9 to 1103.5 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fifth win in a row. Pascagoula NJROTC was led by Dayanara Alvarado Lopez who shot a 291.0. The remaining contributing members were Sam Nason, Haleiana Jones, and Kenairis Villanueva. They are from Pascagoula, MS, and are coached by Greg Goley.
Pascagoula NJROTC is competing in the Champions Division where they finish the regular season in second place. Within the Navy Jrotc Conference they finish in second place. They finished the regular season with a 6 - 1 record.
The cut scores for next season are still unofficial, however thanks to their performance this season Pascagoula NJROTC preliminarily qualifies for the Champions Division in the 2023 National Air Rifle League Season. To complete their qualification, they must still shoot a 1035 or higher in a sanctioned competition within the next year.
South Panola AFJROTC was led by Sarena Hickingbottom who shot a 281.8. The remaining contributing members were Masimo Aguilar, Veronica Hernandez, and Aidan Willey. South Panola AFJROTC is from Batesville, MS, and is coached by Col Robert Mims.
South Panola AFJROTC is also competing in the Champions Division where they finish the regular season in fourteenth place. They finished the regular season with a 4 - 3 record.

Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by the post-season.
The Champions Division is reserved for the top teams in the country. The top eight teams from the Champions Division regular season will compete in a single elimination tournament for the league championships.
The Distinguished Division are the second tiered teams, followed by the Elite Division.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoot 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
