Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports defeats Vilseck AJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports defeated Vilseck AJROTC 2234.2 to 2144.4 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row. Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports was led by Rachel Haines who shot a 582.6. The remaining contributing members were Angelynn Sanchez, Wesley Myers, and Mikaela Sanchez. They are from Houston, TX, and are coached by Laura Haines.
Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports is competing in the Distinguished Division where they are currently ranked in third place. Within the Junior Rifle Club Conference they are in second place. They have a 3 - 2 record.
Vilseck AJROTC was led by Adelena Alvarez who shot a 564.5. The remaining contributing members were Robert Demeo, Emily Dahle, and Ulric Bridges. Vilseck AJROTC is from Vilseck, Germany, and is coached by John Sabala.
Vilseck AJROTC is also competing in the Distinguished Division where they are currently ranked in fifth place. They have a 1 - 4 record.
Next up Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports will compete against Mayfield AFJROTC from Las Cruces, NM. Mayfield AFJROTC currently has a 2 - 3 record. While Vilseck AJROTC will compete against Perry AJROTC from Massillon, OH. Perry AJROTC currently has a 3 - 2 record.
Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by the post-season.
The Champions Division is reserved for the top teams in the country. The top eight teams from the Champions Division regular season will compete in a single elimination tournament for the league championships.
The Distinguished Division are the second tiered teams, followed by the Elite Division.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 60 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 60 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
