Robert Service High School defeats Cactus AFJROTC
Robert Service High School defeated Cactus AFJROTC 2184.5 to 2064.5 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row. Robert Service High School was led by Sophie Wilts who shot a 564.2. The remaining contributing members were Sage Kontny, Ahren Peterson, and Erin Olson. They are from Anchorage, AK, and are coached by Tom Foust.
Robert Service High School is competing in the Distinguished Division where they are currently ranked in first place. Within the Junior Rifle Club Conference they are in first place. They have a 5 - 1 record.
Cactus AFJROTC was led by Ariana Cherry who shot a 558.6. The remaining contributing members were Gracelynn Kastler, Hunter Gilbreath, and Natalee Coti-Alvarado. Cactus AFJROTC is from Peoria, AZ, and is coached by Dan Palmer.
Cactus AFJROTC is also competing in the Distinguished Division where they are currently ranked in fourth place. They have a 2 - 3 record.
Next up Robert Service High School will compete against Piedra Vista AJROTC from Farmington, NM. Piedra Vista AJROTC currently has a 2 - 3 record. While Cactus AFJROTC will compete against Stewarts Creek AJROTC from Smyrna, TN. Stewarts Creek AJROTC currently has a 2 - 2 record.
Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by the post-season.
The Champions Division is reserved for the top teams in the country. The top eight teams from the Champions Division regular season will compete in a single elimination tournament for the league championships.
The Distinguished Division are the second tiered teams, followed by the Elite Division.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 60 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 60 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
