Joliet West AJROTC Narrowly Defeats American Legion Post 41
Joliet West AJROTC edged out American Legion Post 41 979 to 965 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Joliet West AJROTC is in twenty-fourth place overall and ninth place within their 'Army Jrotc' conference. They currently have a 2 - 3 record. Joliet West AJROTC was led by, Samuel Servande who shot a 256. The remaining contributing members were Naomi Jimenez, Gabriela Principe, and Angel Patino. Joliet West AJROTC is from Joliet, IL, and is coached by Benjamin White.
American Legion Post 41 currently has a 4 - 2 record. After the loss they are in fourth place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. Shooting their highest team score of the season American Legion Post 41 was led by, Victoria Smith who shot a 251. The remaining contributing members were Savannah Grimmet, Audrey Williams, and Adam Jones. American Legion Post 41 is from Elk Garden, WV, and is coached by Rod Ryan.
Next up Joliet West AJROTC will compete against St Pauls AJROTC from St Pauls, NC. St Pauls AJROTC currently has a 3 - 3 record. While American Legion Post 41 will compete against Humboldt Sharpshooters from Hartford, SD. Humboldt Sharpshooters currently has a 2 - 3 record.
These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
