Lafayette Gun Club Narrowly Defeats West Carteret NJROTC
Lafayette Gun Club edged out West Carteret NJROTC 951 to 950 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Lafayette Gun Club is in twenty-third place overall and fourth place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. They currently have a 3 - 1 record. Lafayette Gun Club was led by, Maria Koenig who shot a 253. The remaining contributing members were Makenzieanne Wygans, Matthew Stout, and Victoria Koenig. Lafayette Gun Club is from Grafton, VA, and is coached by Karlowe Kroon.
West Carteret NJROTC currently has a 1 - 2 record. After the loss they are in eighth place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. West Carteret NJROTC was led by, Travis Barbour who shot a 248. The remaining contributing members were Angelina Neufeld, Alex Maziak, and Nativia Snavley. West Carteret NJROTC is from Moorehead City, NC, and is coached by Col Giani.
Next up Lafayette Gun Club will compete against Humboldt Sharpshooters from Hartford, SD. Humboldt Sharpshooters currently has a 1 - 2 record. While West Carteret NJROTC will compete against Grove City NJROTC from Grove City, OH. Grove City NJROTC currently has a 2 - 1 record.
These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
