Abraham Lincoln AJROTC Narrowly Defeats North Gwinnett High School
Abraham Lincoln AJROTC edged out North Gwinnett High School 1495 to 1490 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their third win in a row. Abraham Lincoln AJROTC finishes the regular season in second place overall and first place within their 'Jrotc' conference. They finished the season with a 6 - 1 record. Abraham Lincoln AJROTC was led by, Marina Banuelos who shot a 384. The remaining contributing members were Michelle Marin, Diana Medina , and Victor Cortez. Abraham Lincoln AJROTC is from Denver, CO, and is coached by MSG Mark Beasley.
Snapping a six game win streak North Gwinnett High School finished the season with a 6 - 1 record. They finishes the season in first place overall and first place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. North Gwinnett High School was led by, Matt Herrington who shot a 382. The remaining contributing members were Ethan Woyce, Shasta Robinson, and Corina Fluker. North Gwinnett High School is from Sugar Hill, GA, and is coached by Robert Herrington.
Both Abraham Lincoln AJROTC and North Gwinnett High School will advance to the post-season as part of their respective conferences' title game. Abraham Lincoln AJROTC will take on C.T. Johnson AJRTOC (7 - 0) for the JROTC Conference title. North Gwinnett High School will take on Alaska Eagle Eye Shooting Club (4 - 3) for the Junior Rifle Club title.
These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Precision Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now. Followed by a single game conference title game for the top two teams in the JROTC and Junior Rifle Club divisions.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
