Granbury MCJROTC defeats Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club
Shooting their highest score of the season Granbury MCJROTC defeated Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club 1559 to 1517 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row. With the win, Granbury MCJROTC is in first place overall and first place within their 'Jrotc' conference. They currently have a 6 - 0 record. Granbury MCJROTC was led by, Makenize Sheffield who shot a 393. The remaining contributing members were Allison Henry, Clarissa Layland, and Philip Becker. Granbury MCJROTC is from Granbury, TX, and is coached by LtCol Scott Casey.
Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club currently has a 3 - 3 record. After the loss they are in fifth place overall and fourth place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club was led by, Kayley Pasko who shot a 390. The remaining contributing members were Abbigail Renger, Haley Reynolds, and Taylor Niemiec. Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club is from Stratford, CT, and is coached by CPT Alan Wilcoxson and Josie Burzynski.
Next up Granbury MCJROTC will compete against Arlington Fairfax IWLA from Centreville, VA. Arlington Fairfax IWLA currently has a 2 - 4 record. While Stratford PAL Jr. Rifle Club will compete against Rio Salado Sportsman's Club from Mesa, AZ. Rio Salado Sportsman's Club currently has a 3 - 3 record.
These two teams are competing in the Precision Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the conference. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
