Northside High School Upsets Dallastown Area MCJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Northside High School upset Dallastown Area MCJROTC 1461 to 1424 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Northside High School was able to win despite averaging 11 points lower than Dallastown Area MCJROTC coming into this game.
With the win, Northside High School is in twelfth place overall and eighth place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. They currently have a 1 - 1 record. Northside High School was led by Brandon Nicolay who shot a 375. The remaining contributing members were Samuel Mendez, Jerad Lewark, and Hawkins Elijah. Northside High School is from Columbus, GA, and is coached by LTC Luis Hernandez.
Dallastown Area MCJROTC currently has a 1 - 2 record. After the loss they are in thirteenth place overall and fifth place within their 'Jrotc' conference. Dallastown Area MCJROTC was led by Zachary Kauffman who shot a 371. The remaining contributing members were Hunter Eberly , Ashley Henry, and Zachary Grove. Dallastown Area MCJROTC is from Dallastown, PA, and is coached by Matthew Corwin.
Next up Northside High School will compete against Kenmore Varsity Rifle from Buffalo, NY. Kenmore Varsity Rifle currently has a 0 - 3 record. While Dallastown Area MCJROTC will compete against Selma MCJROTC from Lemoore, CA. Selma MCJROTC currently has a 1 - 2 record.
These two teams are competing in the Precision Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the conference. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
