Christian County AFJROTC Wins the Sporter Invitational Tournament
Shooting their highest score of all season Christian County AFJROTC wins the National Air Rifle League's Sporter Invitational Tournament. In the title game last week Christian County edged out Selma MCJROTC 1104 to 1101.
Christian County AFJROTC won the Invitational Tournament, in no small part, by seemingly getting better each week. During the regular season they finished second in the Air Force JROTC Champions Division. With scores improving by the end of the season they were set for their run in the tournament.
In the first round of the tournament they upset number two seed Nation Ford MCJROTC, 1086 to 1080. This score, at the time, was the highest they shot all season. In the second round they out shot Captain Shreve ARJOTC, the Army JROTC Elite division winner, 1075 to 1057, their second highest score all season. Saving their best for last, Christian County AFJROTC broke the 1100 barrier for the first time in the championship game shooting an 1104
Christian County AFJROTC finishes the season with a 9 - 1 record. In the title game Christian County AFJROTC was led by Daniel Foti who shot a 286. The remaining contributing members were Megan Graff, Dakota Steward, David Johnson, and Nathaniel Stewart. Christian County AFJROTC is from Hopkinsville, KY, and is coached by Maj Robert Marlow.
The Sporter Invitational Tournament Most Valuable Player award goes to Daniel Foti. Foti lead his team in all three game during the tournament, including his impressive 286 in the title game.
Selma MCJROTC season too was marked by improving scores seemingly with each game. Despite a few early season losses, Selma finished fourth in the Marine Corps JROTC Champions Division, arguable the most difficult division this season. The last two games of the regular season saw Selma shooting scores into the 1090s, good enough to give them the number one seed in the Invitational Tournament.
In the tournament Selma MCJROTC had to out shoot the second place teams from the Junior Rifle Club Champions Division and the Army JROTC Champions Division, Humboldt Sharpshooters and Pueblo ARJTOC respectively. Their score in the title game, 1101, was their highest all season.
Selma MCJROTC finishes the season with a 6 - 4 record. In the title game Selma MCJROTC was led by Gabriela Sanchez Rios who shot a 278. The remaining contributing members were Mia Castro, Estefanie Lopez, Nicholas Mullins, and Samantha Louie. Selma MCJROTC is from Selma, CA, and is coached by Mike Romero.
The post-season Invitational Tournament is reserved for some of the top teams in the National Air Rifle Sporter League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season that concluded in November. Followed by two single-elimination tournaments, going on now, for the top teams.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
