Selma MCJROTC defeats Humboldt Sharpshooters

Top seed Selma MCJROTC defeated eighth seed Humboldt Sharpshooters 1088 to 967 last week in the National Air Rifle League Invitational Tournament. Selma MCJROTC improved their overall record to 5 - 3. Selma MCJROTC was led by Gabriela Sanchez Rios who shot a 274. The remaining contributing members were Estefanie Lopez, Samantha Louie, Nicholas Mullins, and Mia Castro. Selma MCJROTC is from Selma, CA, and is coached by Mike Romero.

Selma MCJROTC will advance to the semi-final round to take on fourth seed Pueblo AJROTC this week. This will be the first meeting between these two teams.

Humboldt Sharpshooters finishes the season with a 5 - 3 record, including a second place finish in the Junior Rifle Club Champions Division. Humboldt Sharpshooters was led by Annastasia Galpin who shot a 258. The remaining contributing members were Callie Ivey, Julia Ivey, Mya Dissing, and Zoe Dissing. Humboldt Sharpshooters is from Hartford, SD, and is coached by Eric Dissing.

The post-season Invitational Tournament is reserved for some of the top teams in the National Air Rifle Sporter League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season that concluded in November. Followed by two single-elimination tournaments, going on now, for the top teams.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
