Gulfport MCJROTC defeats Mandeville MCJROTC

Gulfport MCJROTC defeated Mandeville MCJROTC 1081 to 1060 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Gulfport MCJROTC finishes the season in first place in their Division with a 7 - 0 record. Gulfport MCJROTC was led by Taylor Gautier who shot a 273. The remaining contributing members were Mackayla Bourgeois, Dimitri Celentano, and Taylor Saulters. Gulfport MCJROTC is from Gulfport, MS, and is coached by LtCol John Owens.

Snapping a two game win streak Mandeville MCJROTC dropped to 4 - 3 on the season. They finish the season in fifth place in their Division. Mandeville MCJROTC was led by Meagan Seese who shot a 271. The remaining contributing members were Peter Cassady, Ethan Chiu, and Mark Shreve. Mandeville MCJROTC is from Mandeville, LA, and is coached by John Cassady.

Gulfport will go on to represent Marine Corps JROTC in the post-season Championship Tournament. They are the number three seed and will compete against six seed Cross Creek NJROTC in the opening round game. Gulfport MCJROTC is the two time defending Sporter League champion. The post-season will begin the week after Thanksgiving.

These two teams are competing in the Marine Corps JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
