Bears Ears Sportsman Club defeats West Virginia Jr Marksmanship Program
Bears Ears Sportsman Club defeated West Virginia Jr Marksmanship Program 789 to 582 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Bears Ears Sportsman Club is in sixth place in their Division with a 3 - 3 record. Bears Ears Sportsman Club was led by Spencer Ashley who shot a 229. The remaining contributing members were Chase Delamater, Forrest Siminoe, and Abby Martinez. Bears Ears Sportsman Club is from Craig, CO, and is coached by Amanda Ott.
West Virginia Jr Marksmanship Program dropped to 0 - 6 on the season. They are currently in ninth place in their Division. West Virginia Jr Marksmanship Program was led by Hunter Ridenour who shot a 242. The remaining contributing members were Jimmy Blankenship, Neveah Ayers, and Ryan Taylor. West Virginia Jr Marksmanship Program is from Montgomery, WV, and is coached by Robert McCann.
Next up Bears Ears Sportsman Club will compete against Baldwin High School from Wailuku, HI. Baldwin High School currently has a 6 - 0 record. West Virginia Jr Marksmanship Program will compete against Kealakehe Rifle Team from Kailua-Kona, HI. Kealakehe Rifle Team currently has a 4 - 2 record.
These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
