Captain Shreve AJROTC Narrowly Defeats Fort Payne AJROTC

Captain Shreve AJROTC edged out Fort Payne AJROTC 1067 to 1062 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Captain Shreve AJROTC finishes the season in first place in their Division with a 7 - 0 record. Captain Shreve AJROTC was led by Caroline Brakeville who shot a 280. The remaining contributing members were Kyla Thrash, John Chandler, and James Moore. Captain Shreve AJROTC is from Shreveport, LA, and is coached by Everett Craig.

Snapping a two game win streak Fort Payne AJROTC dropped to 4 - 3 on the season. They finish the season in third place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Fort Payne AJROTC was led by Kristen Fowler who shot a 280. The remaining contributing members were Alex McKaig, Devin Thomason, and Lilly Sparks. Fort Payne AJROTC is from Fort Payne, AL, and is coached by John Walker.

Captain Shreve will go on to represent Army JROTC in the post-season Invitational Tournament. They are the number six seed and will compete against three seed R-S Central MCJROTC in the opening round game. The post-season will begin the week after Thanksgiving.

These two teams are competing in the Army JROTC Elite Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
