Georgia Competitive Shooters Advances to Title Game After Defeating Los Alamos NJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Georgia Competitive Shooters defeated Los Alamos NJROTC 1555 to 1479 last week in the National Air Rifle League semi-final game. The defending league champions return to the title game this week where they will take on second seed Maspenock Rod and Gun Club.
Georgia Competitive Shooters won their regular season division with a perfect 7 - 0 record. They competed in the Junior Rifle Club Champions division. Over two years of league play they are the only undefeated team; they have a perfect 21 - 0 record.
Georgia Competitive Shooters was led by Molly McGhin who shot an impressive 393. The remaining contributing members were Addy Burrow, Leah Martin, Sam Payne, and Sawyer Williams. Georgia Competitive Shooters is from Griffin, GA, and is coached by Lisa Kelley.
Los Alamos NJROTC finished second in their regular season division, the JROTC Champions Division. They had a 6 - 1 record during the regular season. They advanced to the semi-final game after defeating Granbury MCJROTC in the quarter-finals.
In the semi-final game Los Alamos NJROTC was led by Samantha Miller who shot a 385. The remaining contributing members were Holly Hayes, Stephanie Nielsen, Echo Rogers, and . Los Alamos NJROTC is from Los Alamos, NM, and is coached by Wes Shumaker.
The post-season tournament is for the top eight teams in the National Air Rifle Precision League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season that concluded in November. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, going on now, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
