McDowell NJROTC defeats Los Alamos NJROTC
McDowell NJROTC defeated Los Alamos NJROTC 983 to 873 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, McDowell NJROTC is in third place in their Division with a 1 - 0 record. McDowell NJROTC was led by ZACHARY JAYNES who shot a 264. The remaining contributing members were AUSTIN JOHNSON, AUSTIN SMITH, and SETH BURNETTE. McDowell NJROTC is from Marion, NC, and is coached by Steven Ross.
Los Alamos NJROTC dropped to 0 - 1 on the season. They are currently in ninth place in their Division. Los Alamos NJROTC was led by Neil Wilkerson who shot a 243. The remaining contributing members were Julio Shipman, Kaden Lim, and Thomas Kwei. Los Alamos NJROTC is from Los Alamos, NM, and is coached by Wes Shumaker.
Next up McDowell NJROTC will compete against Easley NJROTC from Easley, SC. Easley NJROTC currently has a 1 - 0 record. Los Alamos NJROTC will compete against William Floyd NJROTC from Mastic Beach, NY. William Floyd NJROTC currently has a 0 - 1 record.
These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
