Pacific MCJROTC Narrowly Defeats Fontana MCJROTC
Pacific MCJROTC edged out Fontana MCJROTC 1057 to 1050 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row, Pacific MCJROTC is in third place in their Division with a 3 - 2 record. Pacific MCJROTC was led by Noah Morrow who shot a 274. The remaining contributing members were Jacob Moore, Nikki Briggs, and Cheyenne Oswald. Pacific MCJROTC is from Pacific, MO, and is coached by Brian Cain.
Snapping a two game win streak Fontana MCJROTC dropped to 3 - 2 on the season. They are currently in fourth place in their Division. Fontana MCJROTC was led by Sebastian Rodriguez who shot a 272. The remaining contributing members were Isabel Hernandez, Ranndy Soto, and Rodrigo Ortez. Fontana MCJROTC is from Fontana, CA, and is coached by MSgt Wayne Harkley.
Next up Pacific MCJROTC will compete against Horn Lake MCJROTC from Horn Lake, MS. Horn Lake MCJROTC currently has a 0 - 5 record. Fontana MCJROTC will compete against Gulfport MCJROTC from Gulfport, MS. Gulfport MCJROTC currently has a 5 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the Marine Corps JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
