Gulfport MCJROTC defeats Oxford MCJROTC
Gulfport MCJROTC defeated Oxford MCJROTC 1084 to 1050 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fourth win in a row, Gulfport MCJROTC is in first place in their Division with a 4 - 0 record. Gulfport MCJROTC was led by Gabrielle Phelps who shot a 275. The remaining contributing members were Rebecca Cook, Mackayla Bourgeois, and Taylor Saulters. Gulfport MCJROTC is from Gulfport, MS, and is coached by LtCol John Owens.
Snapping a two game win streak Oxford MCJROTC dropped to 2 - 2 on the season. They are currently in fifth place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Oxford MCJROTC was led by Ethan Woodard who shot a 275. The remaining contributing members were Daryl Fogerty, Ian Davis, and Shonta Bowen. Oxford MCJROTC is from Oxford, MS, and is coached by David Leach.

These two teams are competing in the Marine Corps JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
