R-S Central MCJROTC defeats Selma MCJROTC
R-S Central MCJROTC defeated Selma MCJROTC 1066 to 1027 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fourth win in a row, R-S Central MCJROTC is in second place in their Division with a 4 - 0 record. R-S Central MCJROTC was led by Christina Murphy who shot a 272. The remaining contributing members were Brandon Conley, Emily Williams, and Victoria Wiles. R-S Central MCJROTC is from Rutherfordton, NC, and is coached by Russell Armentrout.
Selma MCJROTC dropped to 1 - 3 on the season. They are currently in sixth place in their Division. Selma MCJROTC was led by Mark Medina who shot a 264. The remaining contributing members were Gabriela Sanchez Rios, Evelyn Santos, and Matthew Alvarenga. Selma MCJROTC is from Selma, CA, and is coached by Mike Romero.
Next up R-S Central MCJROTC will compete against Oxford MCJROTC from Oxford, MS. Oxford MCJROTC currently has a 2 - 2 record. Selma MCJROTC will compete against Mandeville MCJROTC from Mandeville, LA. Mandeville MCJROTC currently has a 0 - 4 record.
These two teams are competing in the Marine Corps JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
