Pacific MCJROTC Narrowly Defeats Oxford MCJROTC

Shooting their highest score of the season Pacific MCJROTC edged out Oxford MCJROTC 1073 to 1054 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Pacific MCJROTC finishes the season in third place in their Division with a 5 - 2 record. Pacific MCJROTC was led by Jacob Moore who shot a 271. The remaining contributing members were Noah Morrow, Cheyenne Oswald, and Nikki Briggs. Pacific MCJROTC is from Pacific, MO, and is coached by Brian Cain.

Oxford MCJROTC dropped to 2 - 5 on the season. They finish the season in sixth place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Oxford MCJROTC was led by Daryl Fogerty who shot a 266. The remaining contributing members were Ian Davis, Ethan Woodard, and Shonta Bowen. Oxford MCJROTC is from Oxford, MS, and is coached by David Leach.

By virtue of finishing in the top four in the Champions Division this season, Pacific MCJROTC will once again be squadded in the Champion's Division in the 2017 season.

These two teams are competing in the Marine Corps JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
