R-S Central MCJROTC Narrowly Defeats Pacific MCJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season R-S Central MCJROTC edged out Pacific MCJROTC 1072 to 1057 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their third win in a row, R-S Central MCJROTC is in second place in their Division with a 3 - 0 record. R-S Central MCJROTC was led by Christina Murphy who shot a 276. The remaining contributing members were Juliet Lambert, Victoria Wiles, and Carmen Huffman. R-S Central MCJROTC is from Rutherfordton, NC, and is coached by Russell Armentrout.
Pacific MCJROTC dropped to 1 - 2 on the season. They are currently in sixth place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Pacific MCJROTC was led by Jacob Moore who shot a 278. The remaining contributing members were Noah Morrow, Karen Dubbs, and Elizabeth Phipps. Pacific MCJROTC is from Pacific, MO, and is coached by Brian Cain.
Next up R-S Central MCJROTC will compete against Selma MCJROTC from Selma, CA. Selma MCJROTC currently has a 1 - 1 record. Pacific MCJROTC will compete against Mandeville MCJROTC from Mandeville, LA. Mandeville MCJROTC currently has a 0 - 3 record.
These two teams are competing in the Marine Corps JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
