Zion Benton NJROTC defeats South Effingham NJROTC
Zion Benton NJROTC defeated South Effingham NJROTC 1100 to 1064 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fifth win in a row, Zion Benton NJROTC is in first place in their Division with a 5 - 0 record. Zion Benton NJROTC was led by JAYCIE HOENIG who shot a 282. The remaining contributing members were HAILEY SMITH, COLE RICE, and BAILEY HOENIG. Zion Benton NJROTC is from Zion, IL, and is coached by Dan Hackstein.
Snapping a four game win streak South Effingham NJROTC dropped to 4 - 1 on the season. They are currently in second place in their Division. South Effingham NJROTC was led by Ronny Pierson who shot a 269. The remaining contributing members were Joshua Carroll, William Blakeney, and Lucas Payne. South Effingham NJROTC is from Guyton, GA, and is coached by Terry Stautberg.
Next up Zion Benton NJROTC will compete against Laurens NJROTC from Laurens, SC. Laurens NJROTC currently has a 2 - 3 record. South Effingham NJROTC will compete against Cross Creek NJROTC from Augusta, GA. Cross Creek NJROTC currently has a 3 - 2 record.
These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
