Cross Creek NJROTC defeats Hawthorne NJROTC

Shooting their highest score of the season Cross Creek NJROTC defeated Hawthorne NJROTC 1064 to 918 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Cross Creek NJROTC finishes the season in fourth place in their Division with a 4 - 3 record. Cross Creek NJROTC was led by Nina Rhodes who shot a 276. The remaining contributing members were Marvin Pell, Nicki Rowe, and Patrick Johnson. Cross Creek NJROTC is from Augusta, GA, and is coached by Jonathan Shaw.

By virtue of finishing in the top four in the Champions Division this season, Cross Creek NJROTC will once again be squadded in the Champion's Division in the 2017 season.

Hawthorne NJROTC dropped to 1 - 6 on the season. They finish the season in seventh place in their Division. Hawthorne NJROTC was led by NICK moncada who shot a 242. The remaining contributing members were MEGHAN UITZ, JONATHON VILLAGOMEZ, and Javier Moreno. Hawthorne NJROTC is from Hawthorne, CA, and is coached by CDR Don Urquidez.

These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
