South Effingham NJROTC Narrowly Defeats Lubbock NJROTC
South Effingham NJROTC edged out Lubbock NJROTC 1053 to 1037 last week in the National Air Rifle League. South Effingham NJROTC finishes the season in second place in their Division with a 6 - 1 record. South Effingham NJROTC was led by Lucas Payne who shot a 276. The remaining contributing members were William Blakeney, Joshua Carroll, and William Pierson. South Effingham NJROTC is from Guyton, GA, and is coached by Terry Stautberg.
By virtue of finishing in the top four in the Champions Division this season, South Effingham NJROTC will once again be squadded in the Champion's Division in the 2017 season.
Snapping a two game win streak Lubbock NJROTC dropped to 3 - 4 on the season. They finish the season in fifth place in their Division. Lubbock NJROTC was led by Marc Gomez who shot a 265. The remaining contributing members were Adriana Chacon, Reed Melton, and Faus Palting. Lubbock NJROTC is from Lubbock, TX, and is coached by CMDCM Mark Hayes.
These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
