Bridgeport Rifle Club Narrowly Defeats Robinson High School
Bridgeport Rifle Club edged out Robinson High School 1495 to 1494 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fifth win in a row, Bridgeport Rifle Club is in second place in their Division with a 5 - 1 record. Bridgeport Rifle Club was led by Hope Kavulich who shot a 382. The remaining contributing members were Megan Wilcoxson, Ryan Horn, and Rose Reynolds. Bridgeport Rifle Club is from Stratford, CT, and is coached by Josie Burzynski-Smith.
Robinson High School dropped to 2 - 4 on the season. They are currently in sixth place in their Division. Robinson High School was led by Emily Fisher who shot a 381. The remaining contributing members were David Linkh, Alison Chapman, and Jack Curry. Robinson High School is from Fairfax, VA, and is coached by Robert Hardy.
Next up Bridgeport Rifle Club will compete against Queen Anne Marksmanship from Rhodesdale, MD. Queen Anne Marksmanship currently has a 3 - 3 record. Robinson High School will compete against Massachusetts Rifle Association from Woburn, MA. Massachusetts Rifle Association currently has a 1 - 5 record.
These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Precision Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
