New Caney AJROTC Defeats Leavenworth AJROTC on a Tie Breaker

New Caney AJROTC edged out Leavenworth AJROTC last week in the National Air Rifle League. Both teams scored 981 points. By rule, the tie was settled though by highest number of "inner tens." New Caney AJROTC won the tie 16 to 11. Their sixth win in a row, New Caney AJROTC is in first place in their Division with a 6 - 0 record. New Caney AJROTC was led by Steven Daum who shot a 254. The remaining contributing members were Cohen Jones, Riley Bernardic, and Joshua Minor. New Caney AJROTC is from New Caney, TX, and is coached by MAJ Mike Conner.

Leavenworth AJROTC dropped to 4 - 2 on the season. They are currently in fourth place in their Division. Leavenworth AJROTC was led by Trevor Sanders who shot a 263. The remaining contributing members were Steven Verburg, Kaci Linn, and Shanley Palmer. Leavenworth AJROTC is from Leavenworth, KS, and is coached by MSG Timothy Danuser.

Next up New Caney AJROTC will compete against Concordia Lutheran AJROTC from Ft. Wayne, IN. Concordia Lutheran AJROTC currently has a 1 - 5 record. Leavenworth AJROTC will compete against Dinwiddie AJROTC from Dinwiddie, VA. Dinwiddie AJROTC currently has a 3 - 3 record.

These two teams are competing in the Army JROTC Governors Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
