Summerlin Academy AJROTC defeats Henderson County AJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Summerlin Academy AJROTC defeated Henderson County AJROTC 1083 to 1036 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Summerlin Academy AJROTC finishes the regular season in first place in their Division with a 7 - 0 record. Summerlin Academy AJROTC was led by Ronald Aytona who shot a 278. The remaining contributing members were Trevor Grimes, Nick Cheshire, and JD Southwell. Summerlin Academy AJROTC is from Bartow, FL, and is coached by Steven beck.
Summerlin Academy AJROTC's season will continue next week in the Post-Season tournament. They received an automatic bid by winning the Champion's Division and will be seeded third. They will compete against sixth seed Lebanon AJROTC in the opening game.
Henderson County AJROTC dropped to 4 - 3 on the season. They finish the season in fourth place in their Division. Henderson County AJROTC was led by Landon Nelson who shot a 266. The remaining contributing members were Cindy Gilbert, Kattie Simpson, and Aaron Teeter. Henderson County AJROTC is from Henderson, KY, and is coached by Victor Rosentreter.
By virtue of finishing in the top four in the Champions Division this season, Both Summerlin Academy AJROTC and Henderson County AJROTC will once again be squadded in the Champion's Division in the 2017 season.
These two teams are competing in the Army JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
