Turlock NJROTC defeats American Legion Post 290
Turlock NJROTC defeated American Legion Post 290 1104.8 to 1042.5 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row. Turlock NJROTC was led by Luke Hanson who shot a 283.7. The remaining contributing members were Hayden Elliott, Vanessa Santoyo, and Geysha Esparza. They are from Turlock, CA, and are coached by Carlos Montanez.
Turlock NJROTC is competing in the Distinguished Division where they finish the regular season in first place. Within the Navy Jrotc Conference they finish in first place. They finished the regular season with a 5 - 3 record.
The cut scores for next season are still unofficial, however thanks to their performance this season Turlock NJROTC preliminarily qualifies for the Champions Division in the 2023 National Air Rifle League Season. To complete their qualification, they must still shoot a 1035 or higher in a sanctioned competition within the next year.
American Legion Post 290 was led by Joseph Born who shot a 273.5. The remaining contributing members were Elizabeth Gunn, Lillie Miller, and Jessica Gioia. American Legion Post 290 is from Stafford, VA, and is coached by Mike Flanagan.
American Legion Post 290 is also competing in the Distinguished Division where they finish the regular season in seventh place. They finished the regular season with a 4 - 3 record.

Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by the post-season.
The Champions Division is reserved for the top teams in the country. The top eight teams from the Champions Division regular season will compete in a single elimination tournament for the league championships.
The Distinguished Division are the second tiered teams, followed by the Elite Division.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoot 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
