Saint Thomas Academy Narrowly Defeats Jack C. Hays MCJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Saint Thomas Academy edged out Jack C. Hays MCJROTC 1113.5 to 1104.1 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Saint Thomas Academy was led by Eric Zauha who shot a 291.1. The remaining contributing members were Ty Thunstrom, Will Buchelle, and Will Carey. They are from Mendota Heights, MN, and are coached by Paul Preblich.
Saint Thomas Academy is competing in the Champions Division where they finish the regular season in twelfth place. Within the Junior Rifle Club Conference they finish in first place. They finished the regular season with a 5 - 2 record.
The cut scores for next season are still unofficial, however thanks to their performance this season Saint Thomas Academy preliminarily qualifies for the Champions Division in the 2023 National Air Rifle League Season. To complete their qualification, they must still shoot a 1035 or higher in a sanctioned competition within the next year.
Jack C. Hays MCJROTC was led by Kobie Talavera who shot a 277.1. The remaining contributing members were Destiney Garcia, Brynn Gray, and Anotole Voroshilin. Jack C. Hays MCJROTC is from Buda, TX, and is coached by Donald Wimp.
Jack C. Hays MCJROTC is also competing in the Champions Division where they finish the regular season in sixth place. They finished the regular season with a 5 - 2 record.

Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by the post-season.
The Champions Division is reserved for the top teams in the country. The top eight teams from the Champions Division regular season will compete in a single elimination tournament for the league championships.
The Distinguished Division are the second tiered teams, followed by the Elite Division.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoot 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
