West AJROTC defeats Cactus AFJROTC
West AJROTC defeated Cactus AFJROTC 2267.4 to 2166.9 last week in the National Air Rifle League. West AJROTC was led by Celia Gonzalez who shot a 585.3. The remaining contributing members were Seth Gonzalez, Coral Espinoza-Torres, and Ignacio Serrano. They are from Denver, CO, and are coached by Jeffrey F Wilson.
West AJROTC is competing in the Champions Division where they finish the regular season in twelfth place. Within the Jrotc Conference they finish in seventh place. They finished the regular season with a 3 - 4 record.
The cut scores for next season are still unofficial, however thanks to their performance this season West AJROTC preliminarily qualifies for the Champions Division in the 2023 National Air Rifle League Season. To complete their qualification, they must still shoot a 2210 or higher in a sanctioned competition within the next year. An equivalent three-position team score will also count towards their qualification.
Cactus AFJROTC was led by Maddox Falcon who shot a 578.1. The remaining contributing members were Ariana Cherry, Natalee Coti-Alvarado, and Hunter Gilbreath. Cactus AFJROTC is from Peoria, AZ, and is coached by Dan Palmer.
Overall Cactus AFJROTC finishes the regular season seventeenth. They finished the regular season with a 3 - 4 record.
The cut scores are still unofficial, however Cactus AFJROTC likely will qualify for the Distinguished Division in the 2023 National Air Rifle League Season.
Post-season teams and squadding will be posted to the league website and emailed to coaches shortly.
Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by the post-season.
The Champions Division is reserved for the top teams in the country. The top eight teams from the Champions Division regular season will compete in a single elimination tournament for the league championships.
The Distinguished Division are the second tiered teams, followed by the Elite Division.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 60 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 60 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
