Zion Benton NJROTC Narrowly Defeats Patuxent NJROTC
Zion Benton NJROTC edged out Patuxent NJROTC 1136.4 to 1121.4 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fifth win in a row. Zion Benton NJROTC was led by Kalinn White who shot a 286.5. The remaining contributing members were Santiago Camacho, Miah Leong, and Gianna Gomez. They are from Zion, IL, and are coached by Dan Hackstein.
Zion Benton NJROTC is competing in the Champions Division where they are currently ranked in first place. Within the Navy Jrotc Conference they are in first place. They have a 5 - 0 record.
Patuxent NJROTC was led by Christopher Mardones who shot a 287.1. The remaining contributing members were Madeline Vetting , Antara Parekhji, and Rossi Harmon. Patuxent NJROTC is from Lusby, MD, and is coached by 1stSgt Jeffrey Treiber.
Patuxent NJROTC is also competing in the Champions Division where they are currently ranked in seventh place. Within the Navy Jrotc Conference they are in third place. They have a 3 - 2 record.
Next up Zion Benton NJROTC will compete against Pascagoula NJROTC from Pascagoula, MS. Pascagoula NJROTC currently has a 3 - 1 record. While Patuxent NJROTC has a bye week.
Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by the post-season.
The Champions Division is reserved for the top teams in the country. The top eight teams from the Champions Division regular season will compete in a single elimination tournament for the league championships.
The Distinguished Division are the second tiered teams, followed by the Elite Division.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoot 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
