Robert Service High School defeats Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports
Shooting their highest score of the season Robert Service High School defeated Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports 2201.5 to 2102.6 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their third win in a row. Robert Service High School was led by John Eby who shot a 556.3. The remaining contributing members were Ahren Peterson, Henry Riffe, and Clara Hoppe. They are from Anchorage, AK, and are coached by Tom Foust.
Robert Service High School is competing in the Distinguished Division where they are currently ranked in first place. Within the Junior Rifle Club Conference they are in first place. They have a 3 - 0 record.
Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports was led by Rachel Haines who shot a 568.1. The remaining contributing members were Wesley Myers, Angelynn Sanchez, and Mikaela Sanchez. Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports is from Houston, TX, and is coached by Laura Haines.
Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports is also competing in the Distinguished Division where they are currently ranked in fourth place. Within the Junior Rifle Club Conference they are in second place. They have a 1 - 1 record.
Next up Robert Service High School will compete against Perry AJROTC from Massillon, OH. Perry AJROTC currently has a 1 - 2 record. While Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports will compete against West Springfield High School from Springfield, VA. West Springfield High School currently has a 1 - 2 record.
Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by the post-season.
The Champions Division is reserved for the top teams in the country. The top eight teams from the Champions Division regular season will compete in a single elimination tournament for the league championships.
The Distinguished Division are the second tiered teams, followed by the Elite Division.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 60 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 60 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
